What’s Climate change and It’s Impact
What’s Climate Change?
Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. Such shifts can be natural, due to changes in the sun’s activity or large volcanic eruptions. But since the 1800s,human activities have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas. 1
Impact
Global temperatures rose about 1.98°F (1.1°C) from 1901 to 2020, but climate change refers to more than an increase in temperature. It also includes sea level rise, changes in weather patterns like drought and flooding, and much more. Things that we depend upon and value — water, energy, transportation, wildlife, agriculture, ecosystems, and human health — are experiencing the effects of a changing climate. 2
In a series of UN reports thousands of scientists and government reviewers agreed that limiting global
temperature rise to no more than 1.5°C would help us avoid the worst climate impacts and maintain a
livable climate. Yet policies currently in place point to a 3°C temperature
rise
These are few of the issues that are as a result of rapid climate change of which we are already seeing
its impacts.
- Hotter temperatures
- More severe droughts
- Extreme weather events
- Increase in sea levels and smaller island nations getting submerged, Costal erosion
- Extinction of hundreds of species
- Food crisis
- Poverty and displacement
Each passing year breaks the record for the hottest year ever in the history of Earth.
